The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Lago Vista 13-3 April 12 in District 24-4A play.
The Vikings (15-9-1, 7-4) had 6 hits, and the Mustangs committed 8 errors.
“We did more for their offense than they did,” Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter said. “They definitely wanted to win it.”
He noted some of the same challenges for his players crept back in.
“We played in three pretty good games,” he said. “We took a giant step back. A lot of it is we’re young.”
He noted it’s not that his players don’t know what to do when the ball comes to them. It’s more about having the physical strength to make the throw on time for the out before the runner gets to the bag. And being physically ready requires time – in the weight room and for Mother Nature.
That’s where having the senior leadership of catcher Isaias Roman, Evan Nickowski and Sergio Hernandez is invaluable, the coach said, because they are patient at the plate to make pitchers throw to them, have the strength to make just about every play, and aren’t affected by the big moments or momentum in a game.
“Isaias is still swinging the bat well,” Porter said, adding that Nickowski’s grand slam April 10 paved the way for the Mustangs’ lone win in district play. And Hernandez is getting on base, too.
“We have seniors who have those pieces,” the coach said. “And we have sophomores and freshmen.”
As for the district standings, Burnet (20-3, 10-1) is in first place followed by Georgetown Gateway and Lago Vista at 7-4. Jarrell and Lampasas are 4-7, and Marble Falls is 1-10.
The Mustangs travel to Burnet Tuesday, April 16, and welcome the Bulldogs Friday, April 18. The junior varsities play at 4:30 p.m. and the varsities follow.
